New Ebola outbreak in Guinea.
Today, 15 February 2021, Guinea announced a new outbreak of the Ebola virus, which between 2013 and 2016 had killed about 11,000 people. In the south-eastern region of the country, near the town of Nzérékoré, there have been seven cases and three deaths caused by the so-called ‘haemorrhagic fever’. The local health authorities have therefore officially declared the outbreak of a new pandemic. Four infected have tested positive for the virus following the burial of a woman, however it has not yet been clarified whether even the woman buried last February 1 died of Ebola. She worked as a nurse in a local health centre, unfortunately she died of an unspecified illness, which suggests that it may be Ebola.
According to reports by the authorities, as mentioned above, seven people showed symptoms of the disease after participating in the burial; only four of these survived and were immediately isolated in special treatment centres.

In the Guinea region, further tests have also been ordered to better understand the spread of the virus in the villages of origin of all those who attended the burial ceremony. About vaccines, the authorities have already asked the World Health Organisation (WHO) for the necessary tools to deal with the health emergency. The association GAVI COVAX provides about 500 thousand doses of vaccine against the virus.

The Regional Director of the World Health Organization for Africa says: ‘It is a great concern to see the resurgence of Ebola in Guinea, a country that has already suffered so much from the disease’.

The authorities also fear that the overlap with the COVID-19 pandemic could put further pressure on Guinea’s health system. The virus that causes the disease has a much higher rate than the COVID-19 but, unlike the Coronavirus, the Ebola infection does not remain asymptomatic and does not spread by air.
