Come molti sanno, il movimento antivaccinista non è nuovo. Fin dai primi vaccini ci sono state frange di popolazione schieratesi contro questa eccezionale forma di prevenzione delle malattie. Fin dai tempi di colui che viene oggi considerato il padre dei vaccini, Edward Jenner, intere comunità sono insorte contro il vaccino. E le loro proteste ebbero anche dei risultati: a fine ‘800 riuscirono a vietare l’obbligo della vaccinazione, portando inevitabilmente ad un netto aumento di morti per malattia infettiva.
Ma il boom di antivaccinisti è avvenuto nel 1998, con la pubblicazione di una ricerca (poi rivelatasi falsa) condotta dal medico britannico Andrew Wakefield, su una presunta correlazione fra vaccini e sviluppo dell’autismo. Il vaccino in questione era, nello specifico, il trivalente contro morbillo, parotite e rosolia. Naturalmente lo studio era falsificato, e numerosissime ricerche ne hanno smentito i risultati, ma ormai questa messa in scena aveva fatto il giro del mondo. La sfiducia verso la medicina si è diffusa rapidamente, prendendo in prestito le sue idee da teorie del complotto, ricerche di nicchia fortemente antiscientifiche, e ideologie pseudo-religiose.
Ora, in piena pandemia, questo fenomeno si sta diffondendo ancora più di prima, con evidenti conseguenze gravi. In Italia pare che non ci sarà alcun obbligo vaccinale, quindi starà al buon senso di ciascuno fare la scelta più sicura per sè stessi e soprattutto per la comunità.
Ma abbiamo visto che spesso la situazione è risultata poco incoraggiante. Tra gruppi di no-mask accaniti e negazionisti del covid, fomentati dalle dilaganti fake news, la sfiducia verso la scienza è sempre più forte. Certo, possiamo dire che il numero di antivaccinisti non rappresenti la maggioranza. Anzi, sono proprio una minoranza. Ma una minoranza che fa molto rumore, che si fa sentire.
Perchè sta accadendo questo, proprio in un momento di emergenza così grande? Perchè le persone decidono di diffidare dell’unica speranza che hanno di porre fine alla pandemia? Forse perchè le persone sono spaventate. E quando si ha paura, è molto più facile immaginare che esista un nemico misterioso e intoccabile (le case farmaceutiche, i poteri forti, gli illuminati o chi per loro), contro cui dover combattere, invece che realizzare che si è impotenti di fronte ad un disastroso e soprattutto anonimo fenomeno naturale.

As many people know, the anti-vaccine movement is not new. Since the first vaccines there have been fringes of the population who have sided against this exceptional form of disease prevention. Since the days of the man who is now considered the father of vaccines, Edward Jenner, entire communities have risen up against the vaccine. And their protests also had results: at the end of the 1800s they managed to ban the obligation of vaccination, inevitably leading to a high increase in deaths from infectious disease.

Of course, the study was falsified, and many researches had disproved its results, but now these lies had spread around the world. Distrust in medicine is spreading rapidly, borrowing his ideas from conspiracy theories, highly anti-scientific niche research, and pseudo-religious ideologies.
Now, in the midst of a pandemic, this phenomenon is spreading even more than before, with obvious serious consequences. In Italy it seems that there will be no vaccination obligation, so it will be up to everyone’s common sense to make the safest choice for themselves and especially for the community.
But we have seen that the situation has often been unencouraging. Among groups of confident no-masks and covid deniers, fomented by many fake news, distrust in science is growing stronger. Of course, we can say that the number of anti-vaccine does not represent the majority. On the contrary, they are a minority. But a minority that makes a lot of noise, that makes itself heard.
Why is this happening, in such a big time of emergency? Why do people decide to be wary of the only hope they have of ending the pandemic? Maybe because people are scared. And when people are afraid, it is much easier to imagine that there is a mysterious and untouchable enemy (the pharmaceutical companies, the strong powers, the enlightened or those for them), against whom to fight, instead of realizing that you are powerless in the face of a disastrous and above all anonymous natural phenomenon.
