In the night between Sunday 18 April and the following day 12 among the most important clubs in all of Europe have formalized the birth of a new competition: The Super League.
The project consists of 20 teams of which 15 are founders and therefore will always participate, and 5 others, who will qualify based on their positioning in the championship. The competition is organized in two groups of 10 teams with home and away matches . At the end of these games , the top three clubs in each group will go directly to knonkout phase , while the fourth and fifth finishers will play a play-off. The quarter-finals, as well as access for the final , will be played with home and away matches on a neutral pitch. The super league stands as an alternative to the Champions League and therefore would be played during the week. The main reason for the birth of this tournament is the crisis of the top European clubs due to the pandemic. The task of financing the project lies with the multinational financial services company JP Morgan.
The new annual tournament will provide significantly higher economic growth and support for European football through a long-term commitment to pay no-cap solidarity contributions, which will grow in line with the league’s revenues.
These solidarity contributions will be substantially higher than those generated by the current European competition and are expected to exceed € 10 billion over the course of the clubs; initial engagement period. Furthermore, the tournament will be built on a sustainable financial basis with all Founding Clubs adhering to a spending framework.
In exchange for their commitment, the Founding Clubs will receive a one-off contribution of € 3.5 billion to support their infrastructure investment plans and to offset the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic (source fantacalcio.it).
For many this tournament is an insult not only to football but above all to the fans, so much so that it is called “The death of football”.
In the front row against the super league is UEFA who will try everything to avoid giving life to this project. Since he heard the news, president Ceferin has not missed the opportunity to express his opinion and in addition to this he has used unkind words to all the presidents and collaborators of the clubs, in particular Juventus.
The Super League is probably designed to disband before having played the first game. In fact, all the English clubs, probably after paying a fee, have left the competition and all the other clubs are no longer sure of this new project, given that UEFA wanted to inform that those who play the super league will not be able to play. in their respective national leagues (although there is no law for that). There will be many sanctions that will influence the history of football, without being able to go back.
