LE CORBUSIER AND COLOR

Di Maria De Paoli

Today 7 th of May the Museum für Gestaltung of Zurich inaugurates the exhibition ‘Les Corbusier and Color’; in the pavilion Le Corbusier. This exhibition aims to tell to the visitors about the relation between Le Corbusier and chromatism: we know that the Swiss architect makes use of the colors using them as a very important expression tool in his architectural language. In his opinion, color is a fundamental element of architecture and it deserves attention in his choice and in his use. Le Corbusier revolutionizes the use of color in architecture. He is inspired by the arts of his period, characterized by the conciseness in all the fields. For example, Piet Mondrian makes use of elementary geometric shapes and of primary colors; in music composers as Ravel and Debussy dedicated themselves to clean innovative musical compositions. Le Corbusier combines the careful and studied use of colors with architecture evaluating and improving the world of architecture. The most eloquent example of Le Corbusier’s language is the Unité d’habitation in Marseille (also called Cité Radieuse). The exhibition of the Museum für Gestaltung in Zurich retraces the most important milestones of the polychromy used by the Swiss architect. We can enjoy a lot of photography, originals and plans. The exhibition has three large-format installations that assure visitors of a sensually immersive experience of color. The exhibition will close on 28 th of April 2021, remaining open during all the summer to let visitors enjoy its contents.
