Feminist activism

Di Kimberly Brucato

South Korea is a country where women, in the past but also today, are in a position of inferiority compared
to men. Women were bound to stay home to take care of their children and to keep the house, while men
were expected to complete the military service and to work in order to raise their family.
Therefore, women didn’t have the power to establish themselves within the society and they were inferior
to men. Today, many women are fighting against the prejudices of society. Women who have been abused,
both at work, at school and on the street, have spoken out and denounced their unequal condition, hoping
to change things and to be heard. Nowadays, young women can achieve excellent school results and
women with a career can reach higher positions. Another important step is the fact that waves of feminist
activism are being created and Jung Se-young and Baek Hana are a part of them.
Fortunately, in many parts of the world, women’s activist movements are emerging. However, many
countries are still totally behind. To only consider men as a resource for the development of society is a big
mistake, because so many women and girls make great contributions to the country. Women still have to
fight more than men to achieve their goals and are victims of unfair treatment. Young girls, working
mothers and women trying to reach positions that until recently were considered male dominated, are all
still having to use their voices to make themselves heard, but hopefully one day things will change.
