ANDY WARHOL

Andy Warhol was born in Pittsburgh on August 6th, 1928. He was a painter, sculptor, film director and producer, actor and screenwriter. He is considered the leading figure of the Pop art movement and one of the most influential artists in the 20th Century. Warhol, who was the youngest of four children, was born in a modest family of immigrants from Slovakia. At the age of 8, Warhol contracted a rare disease of the nervous sistem that left him sick in bed for several mounths. It was during these mounths taht his mother, also a good artis, gave him his first drawing lessons. Immediately showed passion and a great talent for art, that led him to study Adertising Arts and the Carneige Institueod Tecnology. When he graduated from college whit his Bachelor old Fine Arts degreein 1949, Warhol moved to New York City to star a career as a commercial artis. It was also atthis time that he removed the “a” at the end of his surname to become Andy Warhol. He started working for Glamour and Vogue magazines and he soon became one of the most successful commercial artists of the 1950. In the late 1950, Warhol started giving more attention to painting, and in 1961, he created the concept of “pop art” paintings that focused on mass-produced commercial products. Repetition was his operating method, which led to his success: he used to reproduce the same image many many times, while changing colors (mostlt vivid and bright colors) each time. He is famous his typical use of advertising images from large commercial campanies (and he did for coca-cola bottles paings). In 1964, Warhol opened his own art studio, a large warehouse known as “the factory”. The factory quickly became one of New York City’s main cultural hotspots, a scene of famous parties attended by the city’s wealthiest people and calebrities. On June 3, 1968, Valerie Solanas, a radical femminist, shot Warhol and his boyfriend, Mario Amaya. Warhol was seriously wounded in this attack. Solanas had appeared in one of Warhol’s films and was upset whit him because of this refusal to read a script she had written. Warhol’s public appearances were drastically reduced following this incident. Warhol died in New York on February 22nd, 1987 at ge 58 following complications from gallbladder surgery. This was shortly after he completed the “Last Supper”, a painting inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci. Following his death, his fame skyrocketed, as didi the value of his works of art. Warhol eventually became the most bought and sold artist after Pablo Picasso. His most famous artworks, which everybody knows him for, are the can of “Campbell’s Vegetarian- Vegetable Soup” and the face of Marilyn Monroe, reproduced in various colors.
