Internet addiction: a fatal choice

Internet addiction: a fatal choice. Thanks to the internet we can do many useful things, for example, you can fill out the resume for the job of your dreams, try to discover new things or watch online concert of your favorite singers. In any case internet should be used with care, because if used too much it could be very harmful.

Nowadays many young people use the Internet as a way to express themself or for entertainment, but unfortunately, young people tend to stay on the web for a long time. Sometimes it can only be a passing distraction, but in the worst case the person in question could have serious repercussions on his life, on relating to the people around him, or on not distinguishing what is true from what is false, etc… or may never leave the house.

In some cases, subjects are referred to as “Hikikomori”, a person who has chosen to physically escape from social life, often in search of final levels of isolation and confinement.

In 2008, the University of Okinawa spoke of 410,000 affected subjects, but according to updated data, the prevalence of hikikomori would be two million subjects. However, the disorder is often associated with nerd and geek culture, or more frequently a “simple Internet addiction” (estimated to be 240,000 teenagers who spend many hours on the Internet).

Given the increase of this phenomenon, an attempt has been made to remedy this problem, through two main methods, namely the medical-psychiatric approach, then by doing psychotherapy sessions often associated with drugs, or the approach based on socialization, which consists in being hosted by a community with only hikikomori so you can interact without the internet. Therefore it is very important to distinguish when we can and cannot use the Internet.
