Starring Jhonny Depp, before to his wedding with the actress Amber Heard, Transcendence is a 2014 film directed by Wally Pfister.
The plot tells the story of artificial intelligence researcher Will Caster (Jhonny Depp), who works to create an artificial machine that is nevertheless able to experience the full range of human emotions. However, the project is hindered by anti-technological terrorists who refuse the creation of artificial intelligence, to interrupt the project, therefore, mortally poison Will. Before he dies, his wife Evelyn collects as much of her husband’s memory as possible in order to load his mind and memories of him into a computer with the help of Will’s colleague and friend, Max Waters, and from there he then develops the story. .
Critics have been quite severe towards this film, defining it in effect as a ‘flop’ due to the low income received, but not everyone has despised this film. However, if followed carefully, it can be considered a film that somehow predicts what the human species might go up against in the near future: stem cells that heal automatically, cures for cancer and even death.
Despite the ending that remains open, and which could have been developed in a more incisive way, it is a film that intrigues without leaving excessive suspense, and which is still worth watching.

La trama racconta del ricercatore di intelligenza artificiale Will Caster (Jhonny Depp), che lavora per creare una macchina artificiale che sia, però, in grado di provare l’intera gamma delle emozioni umane. Il progetto è ostacolato dai terroristi anti-tecnologici che rifiutano la creazione dell’intelligenza artificiale, per interrompere il progetto dunque, avvelenano mortalmente Will.
Prima che egli muoia la moglie Evelyn raccoglie il più possibile della memoria del marito per poter caricare la sua mente e i suoi ricordi in un computer con l’aiuto del collega e amico di Will, Max Waters, e da qui ha poi sviluppo la vicenda.
La critica è stata piuttosto severa nei confronti di questo film, definendolo a tutti gli effetti come un ‘flop’ a causa dei pochi incassi ricevuti, non tutti hanno disprezzato questo film. Tuttavia, se viene seguito con attenzione, puó essere considerato un film che, in qualche modo, prevede ció a cui potrebbe andare in contro la specie umana in un futuro prossimo: cellule staminali che si risanano automaticamente, cure per il cancro e addirittura per la morte.
Nonostante il finale che rimane aperto, e che si sarebbe potuto sviluppare in maniera più incisiva, è un un film che incuriosisce senza lasciare eccessiva suspence, e che vale comunque la pena guardare.
